Is black history month racist?

Now it's black history month and I think a few of us sometimes question why there is a black history month. Why do we segregate there history from ares? If we celebrate there history separate why isn't there a white history month or a Asian history month, ect. Why can't we include there history in American history? I've though about this after something Morgan Freeman said.

Uhh . . . Clarify please.

Black history month. As an African-American, I don't celebrate it because I normally avoid any form of celebration that shuts out people of other races. I do feel that it should be kept because like it or not, the fact is that African-Americans were treated the worst throughout the American history. We were enslaved, ridiculed, lynched and everything else you could possibly imagine.

But referring back to early thread we had in this forum, I believe that for us to progress as a nation and common people, we should find less faith in things that divide us. In other words, much like what Morgan Freeman said in the quote you put up:

And to add to that every race has participated in American History as a whole. I refuse to believe that there is a 'Chinese' history, 'Indian' history, 'Black' history or anything like that. It's American history, as every race has a role.

It kinda separates the races, as if it is not normal to be black. Whats not racist about things other races cannot celebrate. Most black people hate it. It should be canceled for life.

There is nothing wrong with paying a little respect to the victims of that.

Yes, it's racist. Most definitely. It relegates the rich cultural history of black people to a single month, as if to say, "Look, we care about minorities! We're good people!" Then, for the rest of the year, the politicians can feel good about themselves and ignore black people in every way possible.

How is it racist? It doesn't really infringe on another race....it just a month of respect for African Americans and their history. Its least we can do for teh centuries of slavery...

Besides, the civil rights movement is an important part of US history, so it makes sense that we would celebrate those parts of history. The mere fact that as a nation, we have moved from slavery and importation of blacks from Africa to laws prohibiting any racial discrimination at all makes black history month something we should celebrate.

As for other races, they deserve recognition, but Blacks have been the most discriminated in the past, and the treatment of blacks has changed the most substantially. The reasons for the changes in how blacks are treated are the result of the civil rights movement and great leaders like Martin Luther King Jr.

The idea that black history month is racist is racism on it's own. We celebrate Christmas, which is the celebration of Jesus Christ, who, no matter what your religion, was only a single man. If you won't complain about celebrating the birth of a single person, then don't complain about celebrating the accomplishments of an entire race of people.

First of all, January 27 is the "International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.". There may not be a month, but we still acknoledge it.

And, we don't celebrate slavery, we celebrate BLACK HISTORY. we don't celebrate Jewish history because it is not a major part of our country's history.

And Slavery in the US may have been abolished ~142 years ago, but racism is still in existance...

In case you hadn't noticed, a lot of people DO complain about the fact that Christmas is a federal holiday. Jews, Muslims, atheists, etc.

For 1/12th of the year, during a designated period that was created by white politicians as a pointless token gesture to black people so that they could pat themselves on the back and talk about how tolerant and accepting they are.

Black History Month is nothing more than a way to ease the minds of closet racists by making it look like they actually care about black history.

Tell me, when you were in school, did you ever learn anything about black history (other than slave trading routes and stuff about the Civil War) during any month other than February? I sure didn't, and I'm half black. I sat through 5-6 months of white history per school year to hear the same one month of black history over and over again. I had to sit in a class full of white people who complained about why they had to learn this stuff. Maybe if we didn't relegate black history to a single month, kids would start to realize that it's something important, not just another 'holiday.'

I agree that it should be included into an "american history month" i realize that our forefathers did some herendous things to african-americans and that was quite some time ago. its seems as though its a cheap excuse from the goverment like "hey we enslaved you for 200 years...heres 1 month a year". i know there are still racists out there but its also seems like its meant to be rubbed in white people's face for what people before us had done. its like the month is reminding us of the past when we should be looking forward to what has been established so far in terms of equality(we still have a way to go) instead of bringing up the topic of racism and slavery. on the other hand if we were to do away with the month some african-americans would be outraged and consider that racist. if we were to have white history month, asian history....etc. it would lessen the importance of black history month to some and also be considered racist. Isn't america trying to go for complete equality? if so why should 1 race of americans get their own month? in more recent years with the surge of hispanics entering our country there has been alot of racism and controversy....is there a hispanic month? what about in the 1920's when the irish were looked down upon when moving here for a better life...is there an irish-american month? the whole idea about seperating one race and giving them their own month seems a bit un-equal to me.

I think the Jewish have gone through as much or more hardship. If you really think about slavey was started by blacks in Africa. They enslaved the Jewish. So they almost had it coming.

Most of the people we celebrate Christmas don't even know the meaning behind everything. So if it's ok to segregate an entire races accomplishments then why don't we have an White history month? I'm sure whites did a lot.

Black history month is not racist. We celebrate white history(for lack of a better word) every other month so whats the problem? Just because we have a month we call black history month that makes it racist? So because the ps3 comes only in black the developers are racist too right? Use some logic. The point of black history month is not to segregate, but to celebrate the accomplishments of a group of people, who not too long ago were considered the scum of society merely because of the color of their skin. And come on now... White history month. It almost seems like you have some racial superiority issues. Most Americans are a mix of other races. Blacks were the most discriminated. They pulled themselves out of it and changed the way society views them.

Honestly, tell me one negative racia issue with proof that it did actually happen, and that it was a direct result of the existance of black history month. By proof, I mean solid proof... Do that and you might have a case.

My personal opinion is that most of the "racism" today is a result of people like you (and a few others in this thread) who don't know the difference between "racial" and "racist". The American Nazi Party is racist. BET (Black Entertainment Television) is racial. Racial merely deals with concentration on a particular race. This is not discrimination, and is not always negative. Unfortunately, people pull the race card on anything they might slightly disagree with, and it makes it look like we are in some sort of downward spiral of racial superiority.

Also, "American History Month" would be discriminating agaist everyone else in the entire world, right. Same concept, only it is now concentrated on a single country.

Honestly, true equality and true diversity is impossible. The only way to reach this would be to ignore the race of everyone, but black people are still black, asians are still asians, whites are still whites. Describing someone by their skin color is not being racist!

There are black and white people and all other races. Denying this fact wont solve the issue of racism and will just make it last forever which imo is one biggest reasons why racism still exists today. We are ALL different people not one person is alike we were all made differently and we must understand that in order to solve the racism issue. Imo to stop racism we must first realize that we are ALL different people who like different things and are different races but secondly we must not use our differences to judge the character of a person.

lol if everyone was the SAME as you said April then the world would be VERY different. Everyone would love each other because we would all have everything in common and everyone would like the same things. ofcoures we are different PERSONS and have different personalities. but in the end we are all humans. we have all our basic insticts that we humans share. why people have different ways to act in certain situations is becuz each human has its own life and have experienced different things then the other. You logic does make sense, but I honestly don't think that black history month is making us think less of blacks.

Getting rid of it would cause problems though. If we did, then we would be accused of racism by millions.

If I remember right black history month was founded in 1927.

Carter G Woodson to be specific. He started Negro History Month in 1926. He also stated that he would want Negro History Month to be abolished as soon as Black history was fully integrated into American History.

However it is a bit strange IMO. At the time, this month was probably very useful, but right now its counter intuitive. Back then, it was a miracle if you could get a whole month dedicated to black history. In todays seemingly more tolerant world, it shouldn't be such an outrageuos idea that black history should be integrated into American history, yet that still doesn't happen because we have black history month.
BHM has served its purpose but now it is more of a detriment to its original cause. Getting rid of it isn't easy, perhaps it could be expanded to black history 2 months, then black history 6 months, eventually black history year, which happens every year :)
